Rev. Dr. Laurie Vervaecke is Chaplin as well as Board Member for Childhelp (Wasatch Front Chapter, USA) an organization which exists to meet the physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of abused, neglected and at-risk children. Childhelp’s efforts focus on advocacy, prevention, treatment and community outreach.

As Vice President of Global Leadership Network, she is involved with education and training for Leadership Development, Child Sexual Abuse, Child Protection and pastoral counseling. Her work with non-profit organizations since 1995 has taken her to 44 different countries. She is involved in mentoring and coaching women to reach their fullest potential, and has also taught workshops at women’s conferences both in the United States and internationally.

Laurie has been a member of International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse & Neglect since the mid 1990’s. ISPCAN; is the only multidisciplinary international organization that brings together a worldwide cross-section of committed professionals to work towards the prevention and treatment of child abuse, neglect and exploitation globally.

ISPCAN’s mission is to prevent cruelty to children in every nation, in every form: physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, street children, child fatalities, child prostitution, children of war, emotional abuse and child labor. ISPCAN is committed to increasing public awareness of all forms of violence against children, developing activities to prevent such violence, and promoting the rights of children in all regions of the world.

Laurie is also a member of The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. APSAC is the leading national organization supporting professionals who serve children and families affected by child maltreatment and violence. APSAC envisions a world where all maltreated or at-risk children and their families have access to the highest level of professional commitment and service.

During 2012, Laurie was part of a team of counselors (with Somebody Cares Intl. & Victims Relief Ministries) that went to Denver, Colorado to do trauma counseling with the victims of a theater shooting. Laurie is also on call to go to Newtown, Connecticut to do trauma counseling with the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Laurie received her Master of Arts in Clinical Christian Counseling in 1997 from Cornerstone University, USA and her PhD in Clinical Christian Counseling from Cheshire University UK in association with NCCA – USA in 2004. She is a licensed clinical pastoral counselor with the National Christian Counseling Association.

Laurie has written a book entitled “Woman – Why are you Weeping?” (2009) a book on Abuse and the road to recovery from abuse. She has also written training manuals on Child Protection and Policies such as: Child Abuse in Religious institutions: Detection-Intervention-Prevention (Written in English and Spanish and published in Bogota, Columbia) and Guidance to Churches – Child Protection Training and Policies (released in 2009).
